We are excited to announce the first-ever science communication magazine published through Michigan Science Writers! This magazine is designed to make research and researchers across all of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and medicine) more engaging and tangible. Our aim and mission is to bring beautiful, fun, and thoughtful science that might get swept up in our fast paced culture, and distribute it within and external to the University of Michigan. We think having a handheld magazine brings the science to the reader and leaves a more lasting impression.

Why EquilibriUM?

Equilibrium, coming from compounding Latin words for equal and balance, is a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced, a calm state of mind, a situation that is stable. This stability doesn’t remove progress or dynamics. Instead, it means that there’s composure between forces of nature – past and future, head and heart, needs and wants, big and small, fast and slow, you and me, them and us. Equilibrium acknowledges these forces, removes the tension between them, and brings a symmetry out of chaos.

The world will never be in equilibrium, but we want our magazine to create balance between science and science communication. We hope to bring education and fun, truth and emotion, and art and science together in a form that whoever glances, reads, and engages with our magazine will feel, if only for a moment, at peace with the world, yet catalyzed with curiosity to learn more!

Featured Content

Leaving no stone unturned, we want to highlight interesting topics that might not otherwise be covered in mainstream or legacy media regarding science and its communication. Especially through our namesake, we want to integrate the fields of technology, with medicine, with humanities, and with art.

We will do this by publishing:

  • Written articles, both long and short forms
  • Interviews with researchers and communicators
  • Photography (from cosmic to cellular levels)
  • Illustrations and infographics
